On Sunday, Sept. 14, 2014 from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m., roughly 4,000 volunteers will participate in a 5k charity walk at Byrd Park to find a cure for type 1 diabetes (T1D). JDRF Central Virginia Chapter, a local chapter of the leading international nonprofit organization whose mission is to cure, treat and prevent T1D, aims to raise more than $480,000 towards the cause at this year’s event. JDRF’s Walk to Cure Diabetes encourages families, friends and co-workers to stay active while supporting a worthy cause.
JDRF is the leading global organization funding type 1 diabetes (T1D) research. JDRF’s goal is to progressively remove the impact of T1D from people’s lives until we achieve a world without T1D. As the largest charitable supporter of T1D research, JDRF has raised 1.7 billion since its founding in 1970, and currently sponsors $530 million in scientific research in 17 countries. Historically, more than 80 percent of JDRF’s expenditures have directly supported research and research-related education. In 2012 Forbes magazine named JDRF one of its five All-Star charities, citing the organization’s efficiency and effectiveness. JDRF’s Central Virginia Chapter is located on Libbie Ave. in Richmond and online at www.centralvirginia.jdrf.org
